Infographic: staying safe on fireworks night

On Monday evening, I was having a driving lesson in North London when a firework came careering down the road towards us. I swore, tensed up and my driving instructor put a hand on the steering wheel to make sure I didn’t crash the car into a lamppost.

“This isn’t a very nice area,” he said.

We are warned every year of the dangers of fireworks and how much damage they can do if they aren’t properly controlled. For me, this point was really hammered home as I sat in a heavy, diesel-filled car, on a foggy night, with the shrieks and bangs of rockets going off in places they really shouldn’t be.

November is one of the busiest times of year for fireworks – tomorrow (5th November) is Bonfire night, and the Hindu festival Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, will be taking place during the latter half of next week.

Even if people aren’t deliberately trying to scare the living daylights out of you by setting off Catherine Wheels on your front door, accidents can happen and it’s best to take precautions, rather than end up in A&E.

This infographic, made for SHP online, highlights the fireworks code and tips on how to stay safe.
