Vigil focuses teens on driving dangers

Cali Arenson values responsible decision-making. The Manalapan High School senior is the president of the school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter.
Her dedication to SADD is evident by her participation in the organization since her freshman year and her position on the state SADD board.
Cali was inspired to join SADD by her older sister, who was a board member, and by her wish to achieve “big goals and big dreams” in life.

“Kids make stupid mistakes and one stupid mistake can ruin everything,” she said.
Those mistakes include drug use, alcohol use and texting while driving, according to Cali.
Through SADD, she is able to get the message across to other teenagers about the importance of making the right choices.
“We are not trying to lecture. We are trying to inform [teens]. Lecturing is the worst,” Cali said.
Cali said about 65 students are members of the Manalapan SADD chapter, many of them freshmen.
“They [freshmen] are coming from a middle school that did not have this, and they want to make a difference,” she said.
The group members meet twice monthly and discuss upcoming events, such as the annual candlelight vigil and the annual run/walk to honor Carlee Wines, a Manalapan graduate who died in 2007 when she was struck by a vehicle as she was walking on the campus of the college she attended.
On April 1, the Manalapan SADD chapter held its annual candlelight vigil. This year the focus was on impaired driving.
Among the approximately 50 attendees were Manalapan Mayor Jack McNaboe and Freehold Regional High School District Superintendent of Schools Charles Sampson.
“I am always amazed with the dedication of the students and staff in delivering the message. This is a program that is of vital importance to parents as well as students,” McNaboe said.
His only regret about the evening, he said, was seeing “empty seats” that could have been filled by a family that could benefit from the event. He added that the “stats are staggering, alcohol alone is the No. 1 cause of death among teenagers.”
Cali said the candlelight vigil was “all about promoting smart decisions and to spread awareness to our peers and our community about impaired driving and how dangerous it is.”
“Manalapan High School’s vigil is a powerful event highlighting the dangers of impaired driving. SADD is a tremendous program within all of the district’s schools. The program’s peer education really hits home with students, with many taking pledges to avoid destructive decisions such as texting while driving,” Sampson said.
According to the SADD website, the organization was founded as Students Against Driving Drunk in 1981 and has grown to become the nation’s leading peer-to-peer youth education and prevention organization with thousands of chapters in middle schools, high schools and colleges.
In 1997, in response to requests from students, SADD expanded its mission and name and now sponsors chapters called Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Cali said her involvement with SADD has made her think a lot about how one decision can affect an individual’s future.

Media campaign encourages safe driving

The next social media campaign will hit the Twittersphere on Thursday. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and as the latest effort to educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will launch a safety campaign they’re calling “#Just Drive.”

Starting at 8 a.m. Eastern time and running all day, the National High Traffic Safety Administration will share facts on the dangers of distracted driving, as well as tips and resources on how to make the roads safer. The administration urges social media users to join the fight against distracted driving by creating a social media frenzy using the hashtag #JustDrive.

People don’t realize if they check a text for even just a second that at high speeds if someone in front of you slams on the breaks or a kid runs out [in the street], there’s nothing you can do to avoid a collision.”
#JustDrive is not the first campaign to raise awareness against distracted driving. “The one [form of distraction] that’s probably the most disturbing for us is the texting,” said Lt. Bill French at the Cotati Police Department.
French also said when texting, one has to type in the letters, making it so they have to take their eyes off the road. Many people have a habit of holding their phones in their lap while texting, so their eyes are focused on their hand while the car is traveling. French sees a concern for pedestrians who don’t always use the crosswalk. According to French, there’s especially a concern that at night someone will get hit down there.”
The goal of #JustDrive is to prevent accidents like the hypothetical one French described. French said if drivers must communicate while driving, it’s legal to have their phones on speaker phone mounted on the dashboard, or by using a hands-free device. Or drivers could download applications such as AT&T’s DriveMode app that silences incoming text message alerts to help drivers avoid distractions and stay focused while on the road.
When enabled, the app turns on automatically when the vehicle is moving at 15 mph or more and turns off shortly after movement stops. Furthermore, an auto-reply can be sent letting the sender know one is behind the wheel.
Texting is not the only form of dangerous driving. Anything that takes the driver’s eyes off the road, even conversing with passengers, is unsafe.
“Sometimes when I have students in the car, I’ll be talking to them and they feel like they have to look at me while we’re talking,” said Lothe. “That’s just not the case. Just worry about driving.”

MARION -- Williamson County Traffic Safety Days is an event are driving home lessons for students from across the region.

Through various stations, students learn about motorcycle safety, driving under the influence, being aware of semi's and what happens in a car crash.


"Overall it's all the things that we do in our classrooms that we talk about but they actually get to come here and physically do some of those things," said Marion High School instructor Dean Schulmeister.


Many of the lessons are taught by Illinois State Troopers. For the first time, students sat in a real car with a simulated scene pretending to drive while distracted. Schulmeister said he hopes students learn to be careful and focused when driving.


"Not worrying about that phone call or not worrying about putting that makeup on or whatever it might be, eating that sandwich while you're driving."


A lesson Zuck hopes other drivers remember while on the road.


"It's not a good idea and you're putting your life and my life and anyone else who's a passenger's life at risk," said Zuck.
