Sixers' point-guard candidates get driving lesson

AS PRACTICE concluded Thursday, Sixers coach Brett Brown gathered the six point guards who are vying for what he has insisted are three roster spots: Isaiah Canaan, Tony Wroten, Kendall Marshall, T.J. McConnell, Pierre Jackson and Scottie Wilbekin.

His tone with the players was calm and hushed. But minutes later when talking to reporters, the head coach was loud and animated.

His message to his players: Slow down when the situation dictates.

"You can't drive your car for 110 (mph) for 48 minutes," Brown said he told his players. "The game is going to require for you to feel the game. It's not a coach always calling a play or stamping his foot. We want to play fast and we're going to play fast. But you can't drive it 110 for 48 minutes.

"Just feel the game. You have to be purposeful in a halfcourt offense when it's nut-cutting time. What are we doing in crunch time? That's the delivery of a coach to six point guards trying to make a team and help me blend a style.

"The style has to be able to absorb the realities of our talent and what the time of the clock and the score of the game says. That's as much on a point guard as it is on their coach. That is the challenge that I give to them."

The coach's preferred starter among the six is probably a long time away from even being on the court. Of the injured Marshall and Wroten, both recovering from torn ACLs, Brown said: "They're a ways away. You always get nervous about throwing out dates. I think it would be fair to say that we're not going to see Kendall for the month of October and beyond. I hope not much further beyond. And Tony further along after that, probably not until some time in December. Who knows?

"I don't want to be locked into those time frames, because they could be longer. We're just coaching them and talking to them and are at the mercy of our medical people and how quickly they can 100 percent recover."

So it would appear that Canaan is the starter. After that, it's a tossup.

Jackson, who is a little over a year removed from tearing his Achilles' and has been hampered by a groin injury, will get his first preseason action Thursday night when the team hosts the Washington Wizards at the Wells Fargo Center.

"It's like the combination of not seeing him plus you don't just jump into an NBA game and get what he had," Brown said Jackson. "He's an explosive, athletic, dynamic type of scorer. When you lose that fitness and lose that feel, your game is watered down . . . You'd have to expect that his game has been hurt by not playing a lot."

One in, one out
Brett Brown will get back one of his big men Thursday night, but another will sit.
Nerlens Noel seems fine after suffering knee and back contusions in a game last Thursday, while Jahlil Okafor will still be sidelined with a sore knee. Okafor was easily running sprints at the end of practice and certainly doesn't seem too hobbled. Though he won't play tonight, Brown said Okafor will be ready for the season opener on Oct. 28.

"Nerlens will play against the Wizards, Jahlil will not. It was good just to see them on the floor," said Brown.

Whether Noel will get most of his minutes at the center spot Thursday, where he will back up Okafor during the season, wasn't yet decided by Brown. He seems certain to get minutes at both center and power forward.

When Brown was an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, he was given the Los Angeles Lakers as his scouting assignment. Many times, Lamar Odom was a focus of his scouting. Odom is in a Las Vegas hospital fighting for his life after being found unconscious in a brothel.
"He would end games," said Brown. "He didn't start most times, but he would end games. He changed the game on how you had to guard him. There were a few years where he shot the ball (well enough that) he had to be respected.

"The message being is that I think of him about how good he was and how different he was (on the court). The message to our players (is) on how life presents different challenges. We're all raised and come up with different privileges, and the bottom line is that we all leave thinking about him. It's very important for me to acknowledge that with our young guys."

Truck driving students get practice while helping out food banks

BURLINGTON — Tate Van Winkle, a student semitruck driver at Taylor Driving School, leaned out the window of his big rig Monday morning as he backed up a lengthy trailer.

Instructor Dave Rome looked on as one of the rear tires clipped an orange cone.

“At least I didn’t crush it, right?” Van Winkle says with a grin after pulling forward.


Van Winkle’s training doesn’t end with backing up 53-foot box trailers.

Further along in training, students at the commercial driving school deliver loads of produce to local food banks.

Head instructor Ed Taylor schedules the deliveries.

“I’m putting fuel in those trucks every day whether we deliver (food) or not,” Taylor said. “We might as well do something good with that fuel.”

Making deliveries to food banks is something the school has been doing for 1½ years.

Taylor said the deliveries give his students valuable driving experience while also allowing instructors and students to give back to the community.

The school ferries food to Helping Hands Food Bank in Sedro-Woolley and to Volunteers of America Food Bank Distribution in Everett.

Each donation of produce — usually potatoes or squash — is picked up by students at local farms. The accompanying instructor guides the student through the entire process, all the way to backing up the trailer at the food bank.

Chad Sturtz, who graduated last week from the driving school, took eight pallets of potatoes to the Everett food bank.

“It helps out the community a lot,” he said. “It’s really nice to also get something and haul it. You can see what it’s like to have some weight in the trailer when you are in the school.”

Taylor said his school is one of the few in the county capable of making these deliveries because he uses box trailers. Other schools have only flatbed trailers, which are not suitable for delivering goods.

During peak months, Taylor said the school delivers about 80,000 pounds of produce. That’s about four truckloads.

He said the students enjoy the deliveries, likening them to field trips.

Taylor wouldn’t mind expanding his services.

“If someone needs something done for charity, that I can do, I’m willing to do it,” he said. “If it’s a simple 50- to 100-mile jaunt, we’ll do that.”

He doesn’t foresee giving up the food bank deliveries. He said he would even make the deliveries on his own time if students weren’t available.

“I plan to continue doing the food bank deal until they don’t want me anymore,” Taylor said. “I don’t see that ever happening.”

Derbyshire boy, Callum McNeilly, named Britain's best young driver aged...12

FIVE years before he can legally drive, a Derbyshire boy has been named Britain's best young driver.

Twelve-year-old Callum McNeilly won the title in the 2015 Young Driver Challenge, held specifically for the under 17s.

Finalists from across the country competed in two age categories, 11 to 13 and 14 to 16 and Callum, of Swadlincote, was the winner in the youngest age category.

Callum, who goes to Paulet High School, in Burton, impressed the judges with his control of the vehicle, precise manoeuvres and quick thinking behind the wheel.

Callum said: "I can't believe I won. When I reached the final, I was extremely happy to have got that far but winning topped it off really well. There were some excellent competitors and it was a tough ordeal. The level of skill between everybody was very high.

"I was put to the test with various different manoeuvres and driving skills, performing as well as possible in areas such as parallel parking, tight steering, emergency braking and slaloming as well as taking on independent driving.

"I have loved cars from a very young age and have always wanted to drive. When I did my first Young Driver lesson in September last year, I was extremely excited to be in control of a car under road-like conditions. It may seem odd to many people to be driving at the age of 12, but I personally believe that it will have a huge impact on driver safety when taking to the roads at 17."

Kim Stanton, who heads the Young Driver scheme, said: "I'd like to say a huge well-done to all of our finalists – and of course especially to Callum, who really did deserve to take home the title. He gave a fantastic demonstration of just how good a driver a young person can be and he should be very proud of his skills behind the wheel."

Mini, 11, the daughter of motoring expert and TV presenter Quentin Willson was in the final, having taken seven lessons.

Mr Willson said: "Both Mini and my son, who is 17, have had driving lessons with Young Driver.

"Four hundred lives are lost each year because of accidents involving young drivers – which are often down to inexperience.

"As a father and a road user I think learning as early as possible and for as long as possible is vital. You can't learn the skills of hazard-perception in just a few short weeks of lessons, and I believe that every child should be trained at an early age to better understand the seriousness, danger and responsibilities of driving."

Shortage of bus drivers causing delays, problems at many Minnesota schools

CHASKA, Minn. (KMSP) - School districts around Minnesota are experiencing a shortage of bus drivers this year, causing problems for students trying to get to school or home on time. The lack of drivers is especially affecting the Eastern Carver County School District.

“The driver shortage is affecting many school districts,” Brett Johnson, Director of Communications for Eastern Carver County schools, said.

Over the past couple weeks, Johnson said 16 bus routes out of more than 100 have experienced "significant delays" in pick-up and drop off times within his district – “it’s unacceptable,” he said.

On Thursday morning, a bus was about an hour late to Chaska Middle School East, leading parents to share their concerns on social media.

“We are directing those frustrations at the bus company to fix the issues that come up because we don’t want to see this,” Johnson said.

The bus company in question is Positive Connections in Chaska. Johnson said the company has been under contract with the district for several years. In a statement to Fox 9, the general manager said they’re working with the district while working to alleviate the driver shortage.

Positive Connections said they have several driver applicants in training and will ensure they’re properly qualified and trained before driving a route.  But parents, just as much as district leaders, don’t want to see late buses anymore.

“I think yes we look at the driver shortage that’s affecting many school districts, but at the end of the day it’s about taking care of our parents and our district and that’s what we want to see,” Johnson said.

A representative from the company said they have 100 drivers, but would like to see about 15 more on staff. District leaders plan on meeting once again with the bus company on Friday.

Driver says Houston County school bus was traveling 80 mph on I-24

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – You trust them to carry your precious cargo to and from school each day, but a local man says he witnessed a bus driver breaking the law on a Tennessee Highway.

Friday evening, Johnny Barnes and his wife were driving on Interstate 24 in Clarksville where the posted speed limit is 70 mph.

Barnes was behind a school bus from Houston County.
“I told my wife I can tell he’s driving too fast. He was passing cars and was accelerating too much,” said Barnes.

That’s when Barnes’ wife pulled out a cell phone and began recording.

“I could not keep pace with him at 70 mph, so by the time I caught up with him, I looked at my speedometer and said, we’re going 80. This is ridiculous,” Barnes told News 2. “I could tell there were students or young adults on the bus.”

Barnes, who drove a school bus in Indiana for nine years, contacted police, Houston County Schools and News 2.

“It was unsafe to drive an automobile at 70 in rainy weather with slick roads. For a school bus to be driving that fast is just uncalled for,” said Barnes.

Barnes sent the video to Houston County Schools Director Cathy Harvey.

News 2 contacted Harvey who said, “It’s under investigation.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said many school buses are equipped with a governor, a device that regulates speed.

However, not all school buses have them and that it’s up to the individual school district.

THP said it is up to school bus drivers, like all drivers, to follow the posted speed limit.

News 2 spoke with a bus driver in another district whose bus does have a governor.

That driver said the bus cannot exceed 70 mph.

News 2 also spoke with Metro Schools spokesman Joe Bass who said all Metro school buses have governors. Some of those devices are set to 60 mph but the new buses are set to 65 mph.
